St Helens Anti-Stigma Charter:

A commitment to challenging the stigma of addiction and recovery

We aim to create a trauma-informed, and stigma-free environment in the borough of St Helens and nationally, recognising our collective responsibility to challenge stigma.
This includes educating and training staff, partners, and stakeholders to address and call out discrimination and stigma.

We will continue promoting drug and alcohol issues as health conditions, respecting individuals’ rights to make decisions about their use without judgement. We commit to treating those using drugs and alcohol with fairness and providing equal access to services as for any other health condition.

We will use positive language and strength-based approaches, continually reviewing and improving our communication to avoid negative connotations.

Stigma involves negative, unfair beliefs about people who use drugs and alcohol, occurring at personal, structural, or societal levels. These beliefs are often based on misinformation and non-evidence-based views, reinforced by negative language, media misrepresentation, and community exclusion.
