Fire Surround Warning!
The Regional Trauma Centre at Alder Hey Children's Hospital see any child who has experienced a significant injury that requires specialist care. Over the past 2 months they have seen 3 children with significant injuries all relating to unstable fireplaces; in one of the instances the child sadly died due to fireplaces falling on them within the home environment.
The Trauma Centre has requested that this information is shared regionally to highlight the risks posed and the significance of injuries caused from such preventable accidents.
Highlighted cases in surrounding boroughs:
Child 1 Warrington (aged 2 years)
At home address in care of Grandparent. Child climbed on a concrete fireplace which fell and caused significant abdominal injuries. Child died as a result of their injuries.
Child 2 Liverpool (aged 6 years)
At home when marble fireplace fell onto child. Parent feeding baby in same room but distracted, saw fireplace falling. Parents were aware that the fireplace was not screwed securely into the wall. Housing association property. Child suffered traumatic brain injury.
Child 3 Knowsley (aged 3 years)
At home, child playing near fireplace. Parent left the room and it is reported that child climbed up next to stone fireplace and it fell down trapping the child under it. Child suffered significant right sided traumatic injuries and traumatic brain injury.
