Reducing Parental Conflict Training (Families in Harmony)

We have received funding from the DWP which has enabled delivery of Reducing Parental Conflict training to professionals.

The Reducing Parental Conflict training will increase practitioners’ knowledge and understanding of identifying parental conflict and the impact of this on children and young people. The training will introduce interventions and resources to support professionals working with families where parental conflict has been identified.  The training is a one-day face to face course.

What will I learn on the Reducing Parental Conflict Programme?

The programme is designed to improve the confidence, knowledge and skills of managers and practitioners who are working with families using a ‘whole family’ approach, this would include practitioners who work with both children and adults who are parents.

Areas covered:

• how to identify parental conflict and differentiate it from domestic abuse

• how to pinpoint issues which may lead to parental conflict /cause a decline in relationship quality

• how to have conversations about parental relationships

• how to help parents understand the cause and impact of their conflict

• how to help parents reduce the cause of conflict in their relationship

• how to decide which interventions, if any, are most suitable for the family’s needs

We recognise that many practitioners are highly skilled at identifying domestic abuse but may feel less confident where parental conflict is concerned. Through this new training programme, we hope that practitioners will become comfortable having conversations about family relationships and that these conversations will become part of their everyday work with families.

We utilise digital resources that are designed to help parents reflect on conflict in their relationship with current or ex-partners, and the impact of parental conflict on their children.  The resources use videos and animations which incorporate evidence-based techniques to promote behaviour change.

There are three programmes

Me, You and Baby Too - helps new and expectant parents adapt to the changes that parenthood can have on their relationship, while raising awareness of the impact of stress and conflict on their baby. Parents completing this course will develop the skills to manage their conflict more constructively

Arguing Better - helps raise awareness of parental conflict and its impact on children. It gives parents the skills to cope with stress together and manage their conflict more constructively.

Getting it Right for Children - uses Behaviour Modelling Training techniques to help separating parents see how they are putting their children in the middle of their conflict. It helps parents to develop positive communication skills, so that they can parent co-operatively and work out solutions together.

Professionals that have attended the training will be sent the link for the one plus one resources.
